Self-Help Groups: expression of interest
« on: June 13, 2009, 02:20:39 AM »

(Original post by Terry, Thu Apr 30, 2009 10:54 pm)

Hi All

Sometime towards the end of the Summer (likely September), The Lary Project plans to run a self-help group offering an opportunity for people with voice problems to come together, access group voice therapy and other services that may include training on relaxation and stress management techniques, Alexander technique, CBT, among other things.

This meeting would be in London. It would be free but it is unlikely we would be able to pay for transport.

If you would be interested in attending, please could you send me an email at meetings@lary.org.uk

Can you please include in your email:
1. a description of what your voice problem is;
2. any speech/voice therapy you have been recommended.
(it would be particularly useful to know if you need to improve your vocal cord closure (your voice is breathy, weak) or you need to reduce the force with which the vocal cords meet (they meet ok but closure is too forceful, problematic in some other way).

Could you also indicate in your email what services you would like to see at the meeting (please rate 1-5 (1=not interested at all/not at all like, 5=really interested/like):

-Opportunity to meet others with voice problems (mutual support from others):
-Information on working (job) with voice problems:
-Introduction to creative things you can do and where you can do them (eg. photography, learning musical instruments, painting, dance, craft)
-Information on medical things like pain management or finding your way around the NHS, etc…   :
-Relaxation and stress management techniques:
-Group voice therapy:
-Group therapy/counselling/cognitive behavioural therapy:

If you can think of anything else that might be useful, please do let me know!

Questions welcome. Lots of info I know... hope there's no overload!
All the best, Terry

I just wanted to re-iterate my thanks to you for organising this event. I found it really helpful to meet others with voice problems and it was great to be able to put faces to people I have talked to on here. My very belated New Years Resolution is to now visit the forum more frequently, and to post more. It reminded me that although I feel I am coping with my voice problems at the moment this hasn't always been the case and may not be in the future. It's nice to know there is a community out there to help us all through the tougher times

Thanks again, Terry

And thanks from me too - I found the day so helpful, the speakers were great, I learnt a lot, it was lovely to meet everyone and feel that I'm not on my own with this. Roll on the next one!

Am just uploading the relaxation CD to my ipod!

Hi Ladies

I very much enjoyed Saturday too. Thanks very much for coming - it was so nice to have such lovely people to start everything off.

Will be sending around an email about the next group.  However, could I check if Saturday 17 April would provisionally work for you all?  It will probably be a slightly shorter day.

Ciao for now...
Terry

17th is fine with me as well, and I would prefer a shorter day.

Hi All

Please note that the support group meeting on 17 April is now no longer possible.  I have sent around an email with a calendar (doodle) on which people can enter the dates they are available for.  Was thinking about 1 May for next meeting if enough people available.

See: http://www.doodle.com/rvzi4qpzwk7n5i6u

Ciao for now! Terry

...thanks Terry.  Have added my availability to the 'doodle' calendar.  Unfortunately May 1st is right in the middle of a Chemo cycle so I'm afraid I won't be able to make that one.

With best regards - John
