Given up!
« on: May 19, 2010, 04:04:51 PM »

Hi everyone,
So I have finally admitted defeat and resigned from my job  >:( Couldn't cope with all the constant stupid, really really stupid comments made by all the customers, nor I think could my partner cope with me coming home and having a huge rant at him!
Not sure what to do with myself now though! Think I may give cleaning a go as at least I won’t have to talk to anyone!
I was sorry to have missed the meeting on Sat but I had an awful chest infection leaving me sofa bound and with no voice at all! Feeling much better now though and definitely hope to make it to the next one.
Hope everyone is well.
All the best,
Kat

Just been thinking about you and your frustrations about your career prospects, I recall that you were studying languages, what were you asparations before you lost you voice, was it interpreter? just thinking a bit outside the box but I wondered if the RNID ever had any requirements for language interpretation although thinking as I type I guess this would be between sign languages and not spoken, do you need to take a job for the money or as something to do. Although it may not be as enjoyable as speaking that languages providing written translation may be slightly more rewarding financially than the cleaning job you are considering. Could you combine this translating with another interest, so that it is something you can do remotely (thus no talking)? For example, I like a lot of people am researching my family history and being an average Englishwoman I cannot speak another language so come up against a brick wall whenever an ancestor has gone off to or come from another country, and there is a small but growing requirement for speakers of the relavent language to help researchers either by navigating around the countries archives for them or by translating historic records, might not be a full time job but something that could provide a small income?

Sorry if this is all just useless babble, I do tend to go on a bit sometimes

Hi Janet,

Thanks for your replies.
I had intended to go into international property law with the end goal being to set up a relocation business for families and/or business looking to relocate or expand to France or Italy.  I was then hoping to learn Spanish and eventually include Spain.  I do really need a job for money as my partner is also studying and we are looking to move out my mum's house, also to get married soon and then start a family!  I also have my horrible loans to pay back from Uni  >:(
I am soldiering on with this translation course although not doing very well at it! Translating was not at all what I had in mind before this happened but it is a possibility as it could generate a good income and obviously doesn't involve talking.  I am intending in September to start a level one sign language course and this would provide other opportunities I think.
If you needed any help when researching your ancestors don’t hesitate to ask, I won't charge of course!!

Thank you though for taking the time to think outside the translating box' that many language graduates fall into and that has been suggested to me on countless occasions! I have thought today about possibly looking into proof reading, perhaps even for school books in French and Italian, full of the dreaded exercises and verb tables I used to hate!

Hope you're well.
